Smartorhypo Highly Overrated But Still Good
Micah Lloyd Excellent characters with emotional depth. My wife, daughter and granddaughter all enjoyed it...and me, too! Very good movie! You won't be disappointed.
Kayden This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
Yazmin Close shines in drama with strong language, adult themes.
susan-317 I loved this film. Wikipedia says this man's story is all horse-poop but I like to think that it was true - or as close to true as one expects from Hollywood. The film is beautifully shot and the horse is marvelous! And who doesn't want to look at Viggo?Viggo plays Frank Hopkins, a trick rider who worked as a scout and messenger for the US Military when it was "cleaning up" the west. We know how that went. He's a long-distance racer on his American Mustang, his "painted horse". I can't say much more without it being a spoiler, so enjoy!
SnoopyStyle Frank Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen) is a long distance rider on his mustang Hidalgo. He's half native American but he lives as a white man. It's December 29, 1890 and he's there to see the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre. He becomes a drunk, haunted by the event, and riding in Buffalo Bill Cody (J.K. Simmons)'s Wild West Show. He takes on a challenge from Sheikh Riyadh (Omar Sharif) to ride in a 1000 year old 3000 mile race in the Arabian desert. Riyadh's purebred horse Al-Hattal is the favorite. His bandit nephew is jealous and looking to take the family honor of owing the prized horse. Riyadh's daughter Jazira is desperate for it to lose so she isn't forced to marry the prince rider as his 5th wife. Lady Anne Davenport has the other favorite in the race. This is an old fashion high adventure. At times, it has the feel of Indiana Jones. It's a nice underdog story. This is a throwback movie. I would like to drop the Wounded Knee reference. It's unnecessary and over-the-top. Otherwise, this is a movie from the golden age of Hollywood in the best tradition.
AlexanderExtazy Omar Sharif's role was nicely done; as well as Viggo's.Viggo played the role of a cowboy/gunslinger (not too much of that) - during the 19th century era - who rides a talented horse. Upon impressing an Arabian sheikh during a show in the United States, he gets invited to participate in a traditional horse marathon that lasts for many long and sour days; deadly is the term best to use to describe such a race.Despite Viggo's great acting, the director of the movie didn't put the story exactly right, nor did he pay attention to simple facts that lowered the credibility of this movie in truly being in a 19th century Arabian setting.Although you may see some Arabian women whoring in the Western world, back then the case was much different. The scene with Viggo laying back in the tent is something that is 101% rare back in them days.Girls were raised "by the belt" as they say, and they would never lower their morals and standards to "laying down the same tent" with a man that isn't her husband; moreorless a foreigner that is far different from their culture and religion. This simple fact is quite shameful to see in such a great movie.Other than that, I loved seeing the deceptive parts played by the Arab tribes during the race.. As well as the tribal fighting, which was a bitter part of Arabia's history.
manateegrey I loved this film. It was incredibly well done - the cinematography, direction, and writing were so great. And the acting! Viggo Mortensen is so great. They did a great job in making the star horse emote and 'give opinions' as well. I have to it, I'm a sucker for a good animal flick (within reason) if it's done well and not cheesy. This is just a good story. The imagery across the desert are beautiful, although I think someone was a little overzealous (not that I can blame them) with the sun in the background on a horsey shadow. But it was all goodVery few movies these days (I know, I know, this movie is nearly a decade old now but bear with me!) get me to the point at which I'm actively rooting for the protagonist, on the edge of my seat. This film was exceptional, I can highly recommend it!
