Thehibikiew Not even bad in a good way
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Hulkeasexo it is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
lglennie The film seems to try to be too many things at once, has a lack lustre plot and has not aged well. It often comes off as ridiculous as Rambo but you can tell the director, Llosa it is trying to evoke serious emotions. Everyone displays dry performances and even though Berenger was the highlight of the cast, he still seems to be partially coasting through the film which is disappointing considering he was fantastic in Platoon only several years prior. The plot has a very typical "mission" which I would not critique by itself but there is no real climax and you will probably feel unfulfilled by the end. Finally, the many decisions by the director like the in flight bullet effects, Scope point of views and slow motion hits and deaths along with everything touched on earlier make it painfully cheesy and something that you would expect in a much older movie considering what else was already done in the genre and what was being put out in 1993. Ultimately I went in expecting a different type of military movie based on Berenger's previous performances. Even though it would not be on my list of recommendations, if you go in with a hankering for mindless action and cheese, you will probably be entertained enough.
Ross622 Luis Llosa's "Sniper" is very good movie to watch once in a while despite the fact that it isn't a great movie or a perfect one because of its minor flaws, but then again not every movie is perfect. I have seen some really good political thrillers in my lifetime some that I happen to consider the best of all time in the genre but unfortunately this movie didn't make the list. The movie stars Tom Berenger as Sergeant Thomas Beckett a real killing machine who is very infamous for his fellow men getting killed on past special forces missions, but this time the military is giving him an another chance with giving him a new spotter named Richard Miller (Billy Zane) who hasn't been on any prior missions and has never killed a person which people can tell because of his hesitation throughout the movie. Their mission is to go down to Panama to take out rebel drug lords. The performances are decent, the screenplay written by Michael Frost Beckner and Crash Leyland is good but it does have holes in it that happen to make the movie entirely predictable in some scenes, while the whole movie isn't suspenseful at one point in the movie like a political thriller should be, but I do recommend this movie because of the strong performances from Berenger and Zane, and because of its sheer entertainment, and fantastic action sequences, as well as the stunts being expertly choreographed. Even though Berenger was very good in this movie it isn't his very best role which it couldn't hold true to his very menacing performance in "Platoon" (1986) which earned him his only Oscar nomination. But I was satisfied throughout even though this isn't a movie I would want to see again.
TBJCSKCNRRQTreviews Beckett(Berenger, reserved and experienced) is top-of-the-line for snipers. He works in the Panamanian jungle. People like him work in pairs, or alone. Trust between the two can mean the difference between life or death. And he's paired up with rich pretty-boy Miller(Zane, more of an office man), who's never killed anyone, for the next mission. Will they ever get out alive? This favors tension(with a constant low current of it through the 92 minutes, or 95 with end credits) over action, and those looking for a popcorn flick should look elsewhere(no offense intended). Aiming for a narrower audience, pun intended, this seeks to be a gritty, realistic and highly detailed depiction of the reality for war-time marksmen. For those of us who want such, it's satisfying, although this approach is occasionally broken by brief bouts with Hollywoodism. Acting and casting is great. It's a thriller with a focus on the psychological, and, indeed, one of the biggest conflicts is between the two leads, who are among the only characters in this. You'd almost be forgiven for calling this a minimalist piece - two people, in the one seemingly endless setting, and a straightforward plot. Both are human beings, with flaws, and as this progresses, they get to know each other, not everything goes as it should, and things will get pushed right to the edge. There is some strong language and bloody violence in this. I recommend this to anyone who likes the concept. 7/10
kosmasp I watched this movie back in 1993/1994 when it came out, on VHS back then. And I had a very good memory of it! So I watched an uncut version of it lately. And my memory got clearer. I know why I liked it back then (it does criticize a few things in war, human beings and other things) ...... but I also know now, that it's not one of the best anti-war movies ever made! This might be one of the better Tom Berenger roles (with the B-movie "Substitute") and he really is good in this one. Billy Zane delivers a good performance too. But it still leaves you with a feeling that there could've been more ... if maybe a better director were at hand, this could've been considered a classic! One thing is for sure though: One scene is classic and it has to with a bullet and the camera ... if you watch it, you'll know what I mean!
