Ameriatch One of the best films i have seen
Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
ChicDragon It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
Cassandra Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
Stevieboy666 I can watching this on TV under it's original - and better - British title, Dance of the Vampires, back in the 1980's & found it both silly & boring. However, now that I have matured, I can now appreciate it for the beautiful masterpiece that it is. Absolutely stunning sets, locations & camera work, great cast, a perfect blend of humour & horror and haunting musical score. One of the best vampire movies ever made. Genius.
Michael_Elliott The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) *** (out of 4)Proessor Abronsius (Jack MacGowran) and his dimwitted assistant Alfred (Roman Polanski) travel to a snowy Transylvania where they run into a variety of vampires. Alfred falls for a local woman (Sharon Tate) and of course she's also wanted by the main vampire.Polanski's DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES is without question one of the worst comedies that I've ever seen. With saying that, how could I give the film a three star rating? Well, it's quite simple. Even though this film is a complete failure as a comedy, there's no question that the performances are excellent and that Polanski has created a terrific looking film. This is one of those films where you could mute the volume and just be engrossed by the visuals that you're looking at.I doubt that's the most raving review for the film but it's certainly worth watching because of the actual look of the picture. I really loved the snowy locations because it made the film really look like a fairy tale. The film managed to look like an old Hammer picture except that it was a lot more poetic and the colors were just beautiful. I really thought Polanski did a terrific job at building up the atmosphere and create a unique world of the undead. Just take a look at the finale in the dance hall. One wonders what the director would have done had he made a straight horror picture out of the material.MacGowran is extremely entertaining in his role as the main vampire hunter and I also thought Polanski did a nice job in his dimwitted role. Of course, the eye candy is that of Tate and she certainly jumps off the screen each time she's there. The cinematography is another major plus as is the music score. But, as I said, the film as a comedy just doesn't work and that's what keeps me from being more glowing on the overall picture.
GL84 Tracking their quarry to an elusive mountain village, a professor and his assistant gradually come to learn the entire town is in the grips of a bloodthirsty vampire count and tries to ward him off when he targets a young woman in the village. This here was quite the enjoyable and somewhat better-than-expected effort that has a lot to really like about it. First-and-foremost among the positives here is the absolutely hilarious comedy that appears here, which runs throughout the film with such frequency and consistency that there's plenty of genuine laughs in here. It tends to be a little one-sided here with sheer slapstick resulting from their bungling and ineffectual hunting means here that brings up their near-incompetence in this task which becomes gut-busting as time goes on with how they're going about trying to get their mission accomplished here when they're always stumbling around over everything in their path merely trying to get the most basic commandments of vampire-hunting accomplished. The scenes of them up at the castle are even better, not just because there's more to play with their but almost all of these gags are incredibly fun with the professor getting stuck in the window and having to guide his skittish assistant through a step-by-step process of the finer points on vampire-staking, the truly hilarious slapstick chases throughout the corridors of the castle and the different methods of trying to keep their true intentions at least hidden despite all the occupants fully aware of what they're doing which makes for a truly fun time here with constant gags and spills. Likewise, other fun scenes include the really funny costume ball that features the two of them dressed in traditional garb to blend in and try to rescue their charge while alternating between revealing information about their quest to free her and the escape plans while out in the middle of the crowd only to fully blow their whole cover with the use of a traditional means of vampire lore to cause this to become incredibly funny along with the rising imminent danger along the way. Even other more overt horror scenes here include the vampires' early raids on the village where they abduct the villagers into their ranks and try to thwart his advances against them makes for a fine time here alongside the slapstick means of trying to keep their charges at bay while the main Gothic castle is truly glorious and enchanting with the perfect setting here to conceive of the events within, and overall there's plenty to really love here. About the only true flaw to be found in here is the rather goofy nature of the vampires here with their lavish over-sized fangs that shouldn't possibly be able to be hidden here such is the over-the-top nature of their appearance, and though that truly fits into the realm of the film within here there's little else about them that should've been attempted here what with their sticking out the wrong way here. The comedy as well can be hit-or-miss depending on the mood at the time, but there's still a lot to really like here.Today's Rating/PG-13: Violence.
montferrato I can not understand why the critics talk so badly about this movie. Dance of the Vampires is a very good movie. It was probably misunderstood in their US release, because it is a movie with a truly European touch, and might be misunderstood or not appreciated by the average American audience. Also, it is one of those movies that looks idiotic at a first glance, but it is not, believe me.Dance of the Vampires has many good points:1. A film about Vampires directed by a Polish Holocaust Survivor is in itself even ironic. It is even more ironic to see that the evil Vampires are of German Stock, called "von Krolock", and have some plans to dominate the world¡¡¡ 2. The Jewish Vampire is never allowed to rest in the same place as their German Vampire creators, being portrayed as a second rate vampire, unfit to the ranks of the "pure race" bloodsuckers. Another irony, another parody, Polish sense of humor at its best, very theatrical. 3. The Vampires Ball Scene is absolutely captivating: perhaps it could be even interpreted as a parody of nobility and aristocracy itself. A bunch of dead-like people, actually vampires, perpetuating their old-fashioned traditions, dance in a castle¡¡ All rotten, dead, evil and decadent¡¡ Do you want it more clear? 4. The wintry landscapes, the beautiful snowy castle, the photography is just amazing, breathtaking, impressive. It does add indeed an eerie quality to the movie, some sensation of strangeness¡¡¡ 5. Sharon Tate: oh, yes, she is very beautiful in this movie. Redheads always make excellent vamps¡¡¡ Here, you see an unsatisfied woman. Sarah, the daughter of the Jewish innkeeper who later turns vampire, is never at all in this world. She is discontent with her reality, and actually seems like she does enjoy the fact of having been abducted and seduced by the aristocratic bloodsuckers. She lived before in the oppressed atmosphere of a plebeian inn. But now, she does live in a dream-like castle. The story of Sarah is the story of a damsel in distress who is not actually such, and that actually does not want to be saved¡¡¡¡ Call it black humor, if you want. But it is that way¡¡ It is sad to hear Alfred when he talks to her in the ball, trying to save her, as she clearly does not want that.A curious mix of parody, ironic-cynical comedy, and actual horror and sadness. Indeed a very good movie, with a very good end. Oh, Sarah, your heart always belonged to darkness¡¡¡¡¡
