Dorathen Better Late Then Never
Gutsycurene Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Samiam3 Undergoing some girl trouble, Joshua Jackson hops on his bike for a cross country trip through Canada. A friend once told me that this is a trip that everyone should do once in their life, to make you realize how big the world actually is. This low budget, 90 minute, comedy drama fails to convey such a feeling of grandeur. It not actually a bad movie, just a bland one.It is bland not just narratively but visually. The sky is always cloudy, and the sights are relatively mundane; sometimes even tacky. The camera is turned less towards scenery and more toward the kind giant beaver statues and wax tomem poles next to a road side diner. Jackson gives a one note performance with no motivation. Liane Balaban, as the humble abandoned girlfriend does a better job earning empathy. She seems far more lost that he does. The few emotional moments in the film feel authentic, but the odds attempts at humour fall flat. Jackson reaches the pacific ocean that the end of his journey, and gets to Kayak in the brief company of a whale. Moments like this might have made the trip worthwhile if there were more of them. Instead the overall experience is too mellow and unremarkable.
Dragana Mitrovic I was recommended this film by a friend. While watching this film I started contemplating my friend's taste, sanity and finally our very friendship. I later realize that I had been trolled.I saw that it had a good rating and good reviews. 11% seem to think this is a 10 star film. Another 11 think it's 9/10, while 23% think it's 8/10.I am not one of those people to say "I wish I could give it minus 10" or to give any work of art zero. I won't give this film 1/10, but 2 is what it really deserves. This film is not a work of art. It's what people call Canuxpolitation. It is an exploitation film on one side and a by-the-numbers checklist-inspired money-grab. People see big budget films with unnecessary violence, nudity, sexuality, action and cameos and see a cash-grab for what it really is.This is exactly that but on a smaller scale. Instead of big names we get cameos. Instead of unnecessary nudity we get unnecessary Canadiana. Instead of a glimpse of a breast, we get a glimpse of the Stanley Cup. Checklist hockey, nature, indie emo music, thinly veiled product placement (the whole adventure was inspired by a Burger King subsidiary called Tim Hourtons). It's insincere, intellectually dishonest, chest-thumping patriotism done by an emo with soft filters, capitalism and commercialism branded as pure love of one's homeland.Let me say this again, it's a movie where a man with cancer is inspired by a Burger King subsidiary to leave his job, partner and family to go on a ridiculous adventure. It's shameless product placement, one step away from Mac and Me.I was surprised this McGowan guy did not shoehorn in references to the invention of insulin or basketball, but I'm guessing he's more of the person to mention Blackberry, IMAX, Molson, VIA Rail or A&W.Product placement film and Tourism Canada ment for the age of ad- block.
tmbdes-265-614555 What would you do if you knew you only had a week to live? Based on the tag-lines alone I was worried about viewing this movie. I was quite pleasantly surprised. One Week is a beautiful simple film about discovering what's really important in life. Ben Tyler, portrayed with depth & grace by Joshua Jackson, has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. His reaction to this life altering news is not to jump immediately into treatment, instead he chooses to purchase a (beautiful) vintage motorcycle & head out across Canada. He takes a trek of self discovery from Toronto in the East all the way West to Tofino on Vancouver Island. This unexpectedly uplifting film is both a study on the human condition & a love letter to Canada itself. The breathtaking scenery is a character all its own & the soundtrack of wonderful Canadian talent flows elegantly throughout. The ending is just ambiguous enough for you to draw your own conclusions. It left me feeling hopeful and strangely renewed. It has become one of my favorite movies. Just lovely.
DNut3000 This movie was complete crap. Tried way to hard to be artsy, a Wes Anderson rip-off. The pretentious narrator became annoying very quickly as well as the crap coffeehouse music. It really wasn't realistic or believable that the lead character had cancer. Halfway through the movie you begin to actually want Ben to die just so this awful movie would end. The ending was even more terrible when you realize the annoying narrator is Ben.(Who looks nothing like his younger counterpart) This movie would have been one hundred times better if they cut out all the terrible actors and made a five minute nature documentary on Canada. Horrible movie do not watch, I feel way dumber after watching this.
