GamerTab That was an excellent one.
Solidrariol Am I Missing Something?
Gurlyndrobb While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
Rio Hayward All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
guymdb Let's start with the positives, which are numerous. The adaptation is mostly accurate, with plenty of time to unfold; and the scenery and casting are top-notch. All the actors do a splendid job but Richard Farnsworth and Colleen Dewhurst as Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert steal the show, giving absolutely definitive portrayals! As for Anne and Gilbert, apparently it's almost blasphemy to criticise Megan Follows or Jonathan Crombie in any way. They are both totally winning in their roles, but I can't help wishing that the young versions of these characters had been played by more age-appropriate actors. Anne's aging throughout is impressive, but nowhere does she or Gilbert look 11. The young Anne's escapades are always charming but quite childish in nature, and would be more endearing if she didn't look 14 or 15. But she's such a lovely Anne, you can overlook this.As a lover of the novel, my main gripe with this adaptation is that the chronology is jumbled up. If you compare this against the novel you'll see that the incidents are all there but out of order. This is completely needless: when you have the luxury of a miniseries, why not just use the novel's structure as a model? Pretty simple really! Consequently many "small" changes have been made which are actually quite big. For instance, in the novel there is no "trial period" for Anne at Green Gables, as Marilla informs her early on that she can stay; in the tv series, keeping her in suspense seems cruel. Similarly there is a scene in the miniseries where Anne confesses that she inadvertently let a mouse drown in the sauce. People often single this out as a warm and funny moment, but nobody ever mentions that it's not actually in the novel! In reality Anne flavours a cake with Anodyne Liniment. So even though this adaptation is more or less accurate, one can see the beginnings of Kevin Sullivan's disregard for the source material - which becomes increasingly more blatant in his subsequent Anne movies. However, when all is said and done, this is a wonderful adaptation and easily the best out there! But that isn't hard since all the others to date are basically a waste of time. 8/10
CheeseDoodleBandit Okay, anything said by "Napoleon_Dynamite_Rocks" should in all seriousness be ignored. He/she and his/her "literature" class obviously do not know the Anne the rest of us know and love. He/she says "the main characters delivered Shakespearean lines ... but it was painful..." without really knowing what he/she is saying. THAT is who Anne Shirley IS. Try reading the book, Napoleon; I'm sure you'll hate that as well. This obviously just isn't your kind of story (your name says it all). As for fans of the novel, by all means, watch this movie! You will NOT be disappointed! Megan Follows truly captured the spirit of Anne "spelled with an e" Shirley - same talkative-belongs-in-Shakespeare's-time delightful Anne. Colleen Dewhurst and Patricia Hamilton lived up to my expectations as stodgy-what-do-you-know-she-grew-on-me Marilla and town gossip Rachel Lynde. Marylin Lightstone delivered an equally delightful performance as Miss Stacy, as did all the other actors/actresses in their various roles. Miranda de Pencier made an excellent Josie Pye. I wasn't disappointed with this movie in the least.
gcd70 Picturesque Prince Edward Island is the setting for this marvellous mini series about a talkative and highly imaginative young orphan girl who is taken in by a brother and sister who were looking for a boy to help them tend their farm.Megan Follows is wonderful as the dreamy Anne (with an 'e') Shirley, whose fiery temper and "feather brain ways" land her in hot water constantly. She plays the little girl growing up and coming to with reality and the challenges of life with real meaning. In of her is the charming Richard Farnsworth and an outstanding Colleen Dewhurst as Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The entire cast are in fact a real pleasure.Adding to this delightful film of L. M. Montgomery's novel is Hagood Hardy's music and the spectacular cinematography from Rene Ohashi. Kevin Sullivan directs with absolute assuredness as he delivers an impeccably well balanced show full of touching drama and charming humour, whilst his costume and set designers recreate the late 19th century with unerring accuracy."Anne of Green Gables" will do more than make you smile, it will have you positively beaming. An absolute must for all the family, and anyone who wishes to have their senses and emotions filled to the brim. Entirely disarming!Sunday, July 3, 1994 - VideoLucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" has been splendidly adapted to the small screen by director Kevin Sullivan in this Canadian television production, recapturing the style and mood of the book and transporting the audience to the early 20th century with ease.Totally charming in every way, this two part mini-series fills one's heart with emotion and one's eyes with tears. It is entertainment in the purest form. Colleen Dewhurst is an absolute must as the strict disciplinarian Marilla Cuthbert, a hard woman hiding a soft heart of pure gold, she is irresistible, as is the disarming "Anne with an 'e'", Megan Follows, the girl blessed with a wild imagination and a temper to match. Follows has absolutely no trouble endearing the audience to Montgomery's lovable "Anne of Green Gables", and the same can be said about the entire cast, but especially Richard Farnsworth as Marilla's brother Matthew, the gentle, shy old man who falls for Anne's foolish, feather-brained ways.Complimenting all the outstanding acting is Hagood Hardy's majestic score, Rene O'Hashi's spectacular cinematography ( which breathes life into the picturesque Prince Edward Island) and the wonderfully authentic costumes and sets.Unfortunately the sequel, "Anne of Green Gables Part II", failed to live up to this picture's delightful splendour.Sunday, July 16, 1995 - Video
giraf_21 Annne of Green Gables is the kind of movie that has everything, it makes you laugh, cry, etc... My favourite one is the first one when she goes to Avonlea for the first time. My favourite scenes are the ones with Anne and Matthew like the one where he gives her the dress with puff sleeves and the one when he goes to buy the dress, and he buys a whole bunch of other stuff trying to get the courage up to buy the dress. All the actors and actresses for the movie are perfect for there roles. The writing is brilliant and some of the scipts are really funny. The actress who does Rachel is perfect playing the town gossip. And the love story between Anne and Gilbert is very good and her friendship with Dianna is good too. I've watched this movie over and over again and it's the type of movie you can re-watch and enjoy it as much as if it was the first time your watching it you can't say that about too many movies. I'm from New Brunswick and my province is a neighbor to Prince Edward Island where the film was shot. It's nice to see the province in a movie and it's so beautiful there as you can see in the movie. The theme song is so nice too. Anyway this movie is up there in the top 5 movies i've seen.
