The Man from Elysian Fields Audience Reviews 3v732p

Myron Clemons A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
Quiet Muffin This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
nzpedals So, you thought Mick Jagger was just a floppy-mouthed, flamboyant rock-star? Think again. Here, he shows that he is also a very good actor. Untrained, so it seems, so perhaps all that stage prancing about is also acting? Here, he is quiet, suave, measured, and totally convincing!Byron, (Andy Garcia) works for an advertising agency, but when he writes a novel, he tells the boss, Go... yourself". But then finds that his book is not selling very well. The first scene, where he persuades a lady to buy his book is one of the best-ever first scenes you will ever see. Then he rents a room to write in that is away from the distractions of a beautiful wife and child. Alas, writers block stalls him. His agent and publisher are not very helpful. He meets Luther (Jagger) from an adjacent office, who offers him a job. Luther runs an escort agency, catering for wealthy women who need a male, for whatever... (rotten job, but someone has to do it?, or... nice work if you can get it?).One of the clients is Andrea Alcott (Olivia Williams) whose husband is older, dying but accepts that his wife needs... company and so, when he comes across them... quietly turns and leaves the bedroom.Mr Alcott is a very successful writer, but Byron finds fault with his latest book. After some 'words', Alcott agrees to rewrite it, with Byron's help, and they agree to share the royalties. Alas, nothing is written down. So, after Alcott dies, things change. At the end, he writes another book and has another bookshop experience, this also is very good, and helps tie the movie together.Williams is so elegant, so real. An outstanding performance. All the cast are excellent too, and there are some especially good scenes with memorable dialogue.
speedo58 How does Hollywood love the Mephisto story? Let's count the many ways. It has been done and redone and it has long since ceased to be shocking. Are there any new stories out there? Who wouldn't like to take the easy way out of a career that is going nowhere? Andy Garcia has his usual long, pouty face. Mick Jagger proves he is a good musician. Angelica Houston proves she can light up any story. Juliana Margulies is a good mother. James Coburn is intriguing as the dying author contriving to have a legacy, but Olivia Williams isn't beautiful enough to carry off the part of his wife and co-conspirator. Very disappointing.
wildman-26 "The Man From Elysian Fields" is a terrific move which captures a different glimpse into the dark side of the human condition. This show can be summed up by the old adage, desperate people do desperate things.Mick Jagger, "Luther Fox", does an excellent job of acting as the head of the male escort service, Elysian Fields. He finds a desperate want to be writer, Andy Garcia, who needs money to keep chasing his dream of becoming a novelist. Offered the chance of making money as an escort, Garcia, at first turns down the offer. However, Jagger, knowing Garcia's weakness, has arranged for him to escort the wife of a very famous novelist played by James Coburn. Garcia basically sells his soul to the devil and the storyline shows how the dark side of human nature takes over only to leave everyone empty.I read when this picture was in production that Jagger had an idea for a script change and asked for a scene to be rewritten. All agreed that this scene was what helped push the move to success. His character was originally set to commit suicide as I understand it. Jagger suggested a scene in a restaurant where he allows his emotions to get the best of him, he has a moment of vulnerability with his old client of many years. He risks himself with her and is laughed at by her. His character in effect created emotional suicide. It was one brilliant scene.Dark, foreboding and yes, very entertaining movie. A side of life that no one talks about.
laltp I wasn't sure if I liked it, it had it's moment some parts made me sad; some even made me laugh and some made me blush but after making my self watch it again I realized that sometimes we the viewers tend to judge movies so fast. The acting is wonderful for most of the cast; I was very much touched by Mick Jagger and Michael Des Barres characters and very surprised by Jaggers acting skills.Even though I am a huge Julianna Margulies fan I found that her acting wasn't at it's finest and I mostly blame it to the way her character was written, however Julianna acting talent does shows here and she manage at some scenes to over come the bad writing of her character and give us a fine performance.Out of everything I loved the all story line of a man who is trying to keep his and his family head above the water and when his near drowning decided to make an unusual decision one, which most of us would never do and by that risking everything and anyone he knows and love. This movie is certainly a great piece, it was under recognized which reminded me in a lot of ways George Clooney Solaris and Confession of a dangerous mind both came out in 2003 and were also under recognized. Even though people may see this movie as a piece of crap, I feel that they will be missing on a great movie one which actually makes us think and wander if we were to ever be in that position would we do the same thing or just let our self's drown, in either way the risk of losing everything we know and love is high.So to all the people who hated it, wait six months watch it again and then make up your mind about it. Cause this is a great movie to miss.over all i give an 8&1/5 out of 10
