BoardChiri Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay
Sammy-Jo Cervantes There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Sanjeev Waters A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Matho The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Michael Ledo Debbie (Rose McGowen) is distraught over the death of her mother and school teacher who died in a house fire. She is forced to live with her overly Christian grandmother (Peg Shirley) somewhere near Hollywood. At school Debbie develops a very quick and unhealthy Lolita crush on Peter (Alex McArthur) her teacher. It isn't hard to figure out Debbie is a very bad girl and psychotic individual who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. As a 1998 film, it had that "been there, done that" feel to it. It really doesn't offer anything new or odd. No telekinetic powers, no twist, no supernatural or cute aliens. The film is a drama thriller and lacks what it takes to be a horror film. Dialogue and acting fairly decent, it is just that I have seen this film done a dozen different ways before. This is just a good generic version.Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Sherrie Rose)
artpf When Debbie Strand is sent to live with her elderly grandmother it is the easiest thing she could have done until things go terribly bad. Her grandmother is too controlling for Debbie and will not let her have a life. Debbie had enough and beats her to death with her cane. Now her eyes are set on her new teacher, Mr. Rinaldi. She finds out that his girlfriend is out of town and erases all her messages on his answering machine. She will stop at nothing to get him even if it means murder. Now the easiest thing for her to do is to kill for what she wants.Rose McGowan didn't go thru the bad plastic surgery when she made this movie, so she's still hot.The film isn't.
GL84 After moving in with her grandmother, a teen's obsession with a teacher at her new school starts to border on the obsessive until it soon appears to everyone that she may be involved in the rapidly-growing body count around him. There isn't a whole lot going on for this one to really make much of an impact in what's going on and it really tends to drag on in the beginning when there's no body count to speak of and it really only has McGowan walking around in halter-tops and other revealing attire to provide any interest. Even several sex scenes can't mask the fact that this one doesn't have much of anything going on in this half, as they're not that erotic or sexual and just tend to make the film's slow opening all the more irritating. This is also due to the fact that the lame detective investigation angle just ends up going nowhere and appears to be there to pad out time, illustrated with the pointless-but-nonetheless-humorous approach of their quizzing each other about various mental diseases does make up somewhat for their lack of interest. The other big problems here are the constant and utterly banal religious arguments that frequently come to a head because of the two characters, which aren't that interesting and just tend to get old very fast, as well as the sheer lack of nudity from the main cast-member despite there being two distinct moments where that could've been accomplished with relative ease, especially with its overall feel of an Erotic Thriller made all the more sense. There's some decent deaths in the last half that provide some gore, but overall it's too little too late to save it.Rated R: Graphic Violence, Nudity, Graphic Language, some Sexual Situations and a Rape scene
lost-in-limbo Been down this variable path (with 'Poison Ivy' and 'The Crush') plenty of times before and the pulpy straight-to-video effort 'Devil in the Flesh' lacks its own vision to set itself from this over-cooked femme fatal genre. The shiny red apple for the teacher was only the beginning for what was about to come. Think of the Police's song "Don't stand so close to me", but with this story the affection isn't shared. Its school girl after teacher, but teacher has his eyes only on his girlfriend. He seems oblivious to the advancements, or just shakes them off. It's disposable entertainment that's largely saved by an intoxicatedly cunning vixen performance by the voluptuous Rose McGowen. You can't go wrong with McGowen. She's delectable… even in an unstable frame of mind! Actually she's too good for such second-rate material. Starring opposite of her is a solidly likable Alex McArthur as the object of her obsession; Mr. Rinaldi the English teacher. He presents a believable performance that doesn't really aggravate or get you criticizing his actions. However I can't say the same about some unthinkable plot developments. Unconvincing is an understatement. It's simply plotted, but its brief format doesn't feel structured and unevenly tries to balance too much (quite quickly) by the end. The back of my video case insists "… delivers non-stop thrills." I don't think so. The direction is automatically sourced and suspense is poor with only the confrontations with an excellent Peg Shirley as the religiously heavy-handed grandmother and McGowen's Debbie as the only real sparks. Underneath the surface is a coldness and a nasty side, but it never takes a risk on it. The music score is better, as it's expressively understated, but rich to the lurking sensual flair and ominous charges waiting to open up. It paints it well enough in the moodily haunting opening credits. A so-so thriller.
