During the War of 1812 against Britain: General Andrew Jackson has only 1,200 men left to defend New Orleans when he learns that a British fleet will arrive with 60 ships and 16,000 men to take the city. In this situation an island near the city becomes strategically important to both parties, but it's inhabited by the last big buccaneer: Jean Lafitte. Although Lafitte never attacks American ships, the governor hates him for selling merchandise without taxes - and is loved by the citizens for the same reason. When the big fight gets nearer, Lafitte is drawn between the fronts. His heart belongs to America, but his people urge him to the party that's more likely to win.

FrogGlace In other words, this film is a surreal ride.
Stephan Hammond It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
jfarms1956 The movie, The Buccaneer, is a movie which might best appeal to older children, 10 - 14 and those who are 40 and up who enjoy adventure type films with pirates and or old style soldiers. It is not quite your typical pirate film. It is a fictional drama about the war of 1812 and the Battle of New Orleans. The most remarkable thing about this film is that Yul Brynner has HAIR in this film. I am sure that he did other films with hair, but this is my first film which I have seen him in with HAIR. I had to keep listening to him to re- that it was indeed Yul Brynner. This is a good movie to watch on a lazy afternoon or late at night. Other than the hair, it is an easily forgotten movie. Enjoy it for the fictional historical type drama. it is Hollywood, not the historical society putting the film on.
vlevensonnd-1 This is an entertaining and fun older movie! The acting is in the typical 'over the top' Hollywood form, such as in the Ten Commandments (That Yul Brenner and Charlton Heston were also in), but it's enjoyable and it kept me engaged. If you are looking for something historically accurate, this will not be what you are looking for. It is apparent that the writer sympathizes with the Pirate Lafitte. He definitely romanticizes him,and holds him nearly blameless in this story. In all actuality, there are many areas of Lafitte's life that remain a complete mystery. I liked the bits of humor added into the story, especially by the characters played by Heston's side-kick, and Brenner's side-kick. The colors, clothing, props, battle scene, are all visually attractive, and of course, Yul Brenner is as mesmerizing as ever! This movie most likely isn't going to be one of your top 10 all-time favorite movies, but it definitely doesn't belong in the 'rotten tomatoes' list, either. I'd say it's definitely above average!
lord woodburry of the films of the young republic few in number as they are The Buccaneer (1958)stands out as a finely crafted film. Charleton Heston excels in his portrayal of Old Hickory's defence of New Orleans with a thrown together force of militia, regulars and pirates promised a reprieve.after Christmas 1814 peninsula veterans led by sir edward packenham, the duke of wellington's brother in law bore down on the city of new orleans. andy jackson had a day to draw together a scratch force to defend the city behind bales of hay.Charlton Heston projects Jackson's terrifying presence and awe inspiring power of command. Yet there are a few colorful comic relief. With the might of the English lioness about to pounce, a young blond haired voluteer from New Orleans asks: I guess the ruckus is about to start.the battle was about to rage but not for long. true to form the British marched straight into withering American fire. in less than a few minutes an attempt to reconquer lost north American territories had been foiled.the battle scene in this movies lasts slightly longer than the actual battle itself.there are colorful side stories in this film of the young volunteer at his first dance to celebrate the victory.
jessicaspx The Buccaneer is a movie about the history of Jean Lafitte, and his involvement in the War of 1812. However, the movie seemed to be a little too entertaining to be considered a recollection of history itself. Lafitte's actions of stealing goods which aren't his and breaking promises causes his hero-like image to be demolished. The Buccaneer was solely entertainment; one of it's main plots being the love life of Jean Lafitte rather than his role in the actual war. The entertainment though, is funny and keeps the viewers attention. Jokes and puns throughout the movie provide a more lightened mood to some serious scenes. Altogether, the movie was good, and the entertainment provided, supplied the viewer with a more interesting plot.
