Linbeymusol Wonderful character development!
SpuffyWeb Sadly Over-hyped
Aneesa Wardle The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Jared_Andrews Irreplaceable You features an endearing story, fairly likable leads and tremendous ing actors. So why doesn't it work? At all. First, it's painfully dull and flat. Nothing about the movie feels authentic or developed. Abbie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) is diagnosed with cancer and is not expected to live long. But she never actually looks sick. She keeps her luscious hair, aside from a single lost lock in a scene that is supposed to be emotionally devastating but is instead eyeroll worthy because it's not deserved. The scenes that are meant to evoke emotional responses never work because they simply happen. There's no build up to pull viewers in and engage them. The moments are slapped on like a bumper sticker and contain the same amount of depth. The result is a tear-jerker movie that causes no tears. The other main issue is with the premise. I'm not sure that any writer could make this one work. Abbie uses dating apps to find a new girl for her fiancé to be with after she dies. It's uncomfortable, unfunny and unbelievable. So, of course, it never builds any momentum and is eventually abandoned in the third act. But by then the movie is nearly over and the plotline most in focus is doomed to fail. The lone bright spots come from ing performances of Kate McKinnon (SNL), Timothy Simons (Veep) and Christopher Walken (pick a movie). Steve Coogan is also around but is underused. Just another example of the filmmakers focusing on the wrong aspects of the story. With some better choices of plot and character use, this movie might have been halfway decent. But the choices were the wrong ones, and consequently, this movie is a very poor one.
rozziemarie The sound and editing and writing are painful. If you enjoy the Hallmark channel, you will love this film. I hope this is not the direction Netflix is going.
markj-02556 Irreplaceable You is about a couple called Abbie and Sam, who are madly in love with each other. One day Abbie gets the bad news that she has cancer, and tries to set up her fiancé Sam with another woman after her death.Irreplaceable you is directed by producer Stephanie Lang (Veep) in her directorial debut, and wrote by actress Bess Wohl (Flight Plan) in her screenwriting debut. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) plays Abbie, Michiel Huisman (The Age of Adaline) plays Sam and Steve Coogan (Philomena) plays the wise group therapy leader Mitch. The best thing about this film is easily the acting. Everybody tries, and in some parts I it to getting teary eyed. But that is about as good as this film gets.First of all, the writer Bess Wohl probably hasn't seen the film Adaption (2002) because she uses narration a lot. However the same shot being used every time narration is used doesn't make it any better, Stephanie Lang does an ok job at best, in my opinion she should probably stick to producing because she seems much better at that. Some of the lines are genuinely cringe worthy at some points in the film, and its like its ticking every romantic film cliché. Even though the concept is fairly original it does not capitalize on it at all making the film seem like a giant missed opportunity. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is having an awful 2018, first The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) now this. She tries her best in both of these films and she seems to be really talented, all she needs is a good script. If you like romantic films or just looking to put something on in the background this film will be okay. Otherwise stay as far away from it as you can.4/10
Maz-hell This film is extremely weird. It tries to be "romantic" and at the same time a comedy and a drama, failing completely in every sense. The characters are terrifying: The woman is dying of cancer, so she decides that it is in the best of her interest to... find her replacement? She starts to look for a partner for her nerdy companion, which is weird for not saying creepy, before he even considers it a problem. She is a manipulative, insane person. In no way should this be considered funny, romantic or something short of insane. Her partner is an absolute zero. His in the movie because someone needed to say that the idea is totally crazy... and still does what she tells him to do. Yeah. Not dependant at all. Tottally logical. The rest of the characters are there because... they needed more than 2 characters. None of them are important. At all. And that is it. Christopher Walken (Seriously man... What happened to you?) is the only character that is kinda likeable, but not enough to save the movie. The plot is bizarre, cringy and it fails constantly in deciding the tone of the film. It fails so hard it is distracting. The actual fun in the movie is that it never decides the adequate tone that it should carry. The cinematography is bland, so is the photography. Nothing spectacular or, at least, remarkable. The makeup is... bad. Honestly bad. For a terminal patient everyone looks pretty good in general with a kinda-pale face. This combined with the mediocre-at-best acting makes the cancer ward patients look like they are about to go to the disco. In short, a cringeworthy piece of non-entertainment about a cancer patient manipulating her way into a bland proffessor of something. Boring as hell, distractingly entertaining by accident from time to time. Do not watch this.
