BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Lucybespro It is a performances centric movie
PiraBit if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Plustown A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
TheBlueHairedLawyer I absolutely fell in love with STTW when I was in junior high school. I had the soundtrack on CD, I had the books, I had the DVD sets, some episodes taped on VHS, everything (which these days leads me to believe that the show was used mainly to sell merchandise that nobody would give a damn about ten years later). Being a kid, it was my first real experience with one of the "cool" shows since the only other that aired in my small town was The Secret World of Alex Mack, which was very hokey. I guess STTW wasn't terrible for kids, but going back and watching it as an adult, it just looks like it mimicked every fad of its time in all the worst ways, all while subjecting its viewers to its sea of whiny, spoiled, immature and self-centred characters. Melissa Joan Hart especially, watching her as an adult I've realized now more than ever that she could never even act worth anything, and her character of Sabrina was a lazy, shallow and coddled brat who never seemed satisfied with anything or anyone. She was sick of her mundane life and kept complaining about it. Then she finds out she's a witch with magical powers. Then she whines and complains about how she hates being a witch and wants to be normal. All she seems to care about is her own self-image, clothes and boys. She puts down everyone, from her doting albeit eccentric aunts, to her talking cat. She's supposed to be this insecure semi-geek type girl, and yet she's just another queen bee who just happens to do all the judging and teasing of others in the privacy of her own home. She's hardly a likable character at the best of times, so for the main lead it perhaps wasn't the best way to go about it. I've gotta say that the only characters I truly liked or cared anything for were Sabrina's funny and quirky teachers, from Mr. Poole to Ms. Quick, and of course, the jerky but not entirely bad guy Mr. Kraft. The show did bring on some good guest characters too, but rarely did they make more than one appearance overall. The show's "special effects" (and I use that term lightly) have never been realistic or convincing, from a repairman with a fake raccoon tail tied to his behind, to the Salem puppet which terrified me when I initially saw the show as a kid because it looks almost like a ventriloquist's dummy (at least Salem was at least somewhat tolerable compared to Sabrina herself). To be fair though, we're talking about a comedy show, and Season 1 was when it was only just trying to get off the ground. I had hoped that it would progress as it continued but actually it got worse, especially when Sabrina entered her college years, got a bad dye job and the element of crass humour and innuendo jokes entered the picture, too. It had hit a point where it was too adult for children but too childish for adults. It became one of those types of obligatory shows that you would put on every day after school simply because there was nothing else on. So I'm honestly not surprised that it ended when it did. Its very campy performances, lame dialogue, predictable episode plots and annoying soundtrack by various 1990's pop bands of the time all seemed to drag it down to the point where it could go no further.
LyraAlluse A lot of people criticize the college years of Sabrina but I actually like them a lot better than the teenage years. In the high school seasons, Sabrina was spoiled, self-centered, and honestly not a very likable character. What carried the show were the side characters like Salem, Hilda, Zelda, Dreama, Harvey, and so on.However in the university seasons I felt that Sabrina actually became likable because she was less selfish and actually used her powers to help other people who needed it.It is too bad that a lot of people couldn't adjust to the change because I would have liked to see a few seasons which documented her life in the real world as an adult, maybe solving real world/ mortal problems.I also would have liked to see a side series about her cousin Amanda and her adventures in the delinquent high school. There is so much they could have done but didn't because of the bad press of the college years. Hopefully they can bring it back one of these days. I loved all of Sabrina and would love to see more.
xxiaowenxx It's just good, not amazing. I did enjoy the series when I watched and I really missed TV shows like this, especially live action: the simplicity of it but also, what I love most of it is how relatable the show tries to be. Sabrina obviously isn't perfect, and she know she isn't but tries her best to be the best she is. It dives into some uncharted territory, even in today's standards. In one episode, it talked about what it means to be a non-witch in a witch community, or even a half witch. It's probably one of my favorite episodes. It's also inventive: what crazy Sabrina adventure are we in today? How will her magic totally backfire and how will she fix it? On the other hand, it is a bit bland. Sabrina, I feel like the writers tried to give her a personality but it wasn't totally memorable but I feel like they were just trying to write the story about the typical teenager in this time, and in that sense, I thought they did a good job of. I like the Aunts also and I did feel when they left, the show kinda went down hill. I really enjoyed Roxy's and Miles' when they came in but later near the end of the show, they felt kinda flat. I also feel like the celebrity appearances I could do without...but they don't play a huge part of the show so I don't mind. Through, in the first few seasons, I wish they had less annoying side characters: the super smart and involved and the slightly ditsy, always trying to be popular one. Maybe they were trying something new, I'm glad but they were in the show for way too long. I feel like the show is definitely worth a watch through. It isn't amazing but some elements they did really well. I feel like this is a great show to show kids now a days: it has great morals, great creativity. And Salem's laugh, hilarious every time.
juicyfruit-xo Sabrina the Teenage Witch was one of my favorite T.V shows of life :D i used to watch back to back episodes everyday when i got home from school. So far i think i've watched every episode at least once and the whole series 3 or 4 times. Melissa Joan Hart plays the perfect teenage girl/witch with normal teenager troubles that we can all relate to. She's funny, smart, outgoing, witty, and a lot more. Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick both fit the part very well as Sabrina's aunts. Zelda, the intelligent scientist, and Hilda the crazy, wacky one make a perfect balance in Sabrina's life. Though i must agree that the college years aren't as good as her high school years, but that doesn't mean they weren't still good. I think the ending was awesome although it was not what i hoped, it made sense and i loved it anyways. :)
