Cathardincu Surprisingly incoherent and boring

inspire-34951 I loved this show. I just subscribed to HBO because of this show and after bingeing on it discovered it is not renewed. I'm really disappointed. I loved the music and the acting. I grew up in the 70's and it really takes me back (to the music). Loved it! I highly recommend this to anyone who grew up in the 70's or that is just curious about how the recording industry was at that time.
Babalugats The show is well done. It's got top notch talent. Scorese directed the first episode which was 2 hours, like a movie. You've got Bobby Cannavale in the lead - this guy is a top notch actor and I'm talking Pacino/DeNiro type.The problem here isn't the clichés like everyone else is complaining about. It's the fact every character is an absolute dick. There isn't anyone in this show you remotely care about and the worst is the lead character played by Cannavale. He's a jerk. He's a rude, drug addicted douche. It literally gets to the point where you just don't want to see him in a scene because he's going to do or say something really stupid and it just gets cringe worthy after a while. And there's nothing wrong with having your lead be a really bad guy. But he's not interesting at all. Tony Soprano was interesting. Joe Pesci in Goodfellas was the worst guy ever, but he was incredibly interesting. There's nothing interesting about this guy at all. I hate him. Everyone hates him. It's similar to Mad Men except the characters are far more unlikable. I really couldn't care less about a single person in this show. Cannavale's character is involved in a murder investigation - I just want him to go down and spend the rest of his life in prison. I couldn't dislike him any more.One of the good things is characterizations of real artists. The Bowie guy was pretty good. The Elvis guy had the speaking voice down cold, you'd swear it was Elvis talking (didn't look a lot like him).Outside that, the fact this show was canceled after one season is a good thing. Could have been a really great show especially with the talent involved in this thing. They dropped ball big time.
thirdeyemedia I can see that there is some artistic merit here (though historically they've got some things wrong about punk and hip hop), so it is not to be written off, but I couldn't past the third episode.Not only is it slow and ponderous, with an overuse of flash backs and forwards but the central character is impossible to empathise with.He is neither a hero nor anti hero. (spoliers) I feel sorry for him being a recovering drug addict, but he seems to be weak spirited before he even returns to drug use, incapable of making decisions or having any faith in himself.maybe this is a realistic portrayal of a successful man gone wrong (though I doubt), but it is totally unedifying and mind numbingly boring to watch. Occasionally the boredom is broken with frustration.Even the fast forward button couldn't help me with this one, there was nothing redeemable about it as an entertainment experience.Except, perhaps, Olivia Wilde.
Jemma Giddings Now, I only started watching this for one reason- John Cameron Mitchell as Andy Worhol, and he appears in three episodes. I thought it would be best to start from the first episode so I could follow the story, but to be honest I had given up by the end of the pilot and watched the second episode with little interest. I ended up just skipping through to the episodes and scenes he appeared in. There wasn't a gripping story line (which is usually established in the first couple of episodes to keep viewers hooked) it was just shouting, drugs and sex. Very stereotypical for a show set in the 70s, with this great cast something more original should have been done with just hints of what we actually see. As I said, I only watched 2 full episodes and the scenes with John CM, so I didn't even finish the series. The only redeeming qualities are John Cameron Mitchell, Olivia Wilde and the music, but even then it's not enough to keep me watching.3 out of 10 stars.
