ada the leading man is my tpye
Stometer Save your money for something good and enjoyable
Lancoor A very feeble attempt at affirmatie action
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
vincentlynch-moonoi After reading some of the negative reviews here about this mini-series, I have to conclude that those that are so negative must have been written by people who really didn't pay much attention to what they were watching, and/or knew little about westward-expansion-era history.I'm not saying this is the best mini-series ever produced for television, but it has a scope to it that few television program EVER have. In fact, my one criticism would be a bit too much scope. A couple of times, when new plot lines developed, I though...gee, they're trying to fit everything into this...and there were times I thought they were doing too much, and I would have preferred a little more depth. But, still and all, this is a remarkable television production. The acting here is consistently strong. If I were to single one actor out for praise, it would be Matthew Settle. Excellent performance. I was sorry to see him go (as characters age in the series, new actors take their place with the role). While I cannot speak for the entire series, I was impressed by the depiction of the Sand Creek Massacre, since I have been there and read a bit about the event. It seemed to be a very accurate depiction of the event...and of the attitude of Chivington, whose actions caused more blood spilt from that point of time and into the future, than any other single event in the Indian Wars.A perfect drama. Probably not. But far, far above the quality of most of what's on television. Highly recommended. The rating "8" is for a television drama.
NoName1989 I expected a lot of this mini-series, because Steven Spielberg was the executive producer. And you notice that when you watch this series. The direction is very good! This series must have cost a lot of money, because it's excellently filmed. Very interesting is, that the series shows the situation in a different way. Not like in a traditional western, where the Americans are the hero's and the Indians are the stupid barbarians. Nicely done! Again a very good product by Steven Spielberg! But sometimes the English that is spoken, is difficult to understand, certainly when there are no subtitles. But nevertheless, very good mini-series!
nmckane I finally saw the whole mini series finally on the 29th. I have a great sympathy for the Native Americans. Even though I have European blood there is also some Shawnee and Cherokee. Steven Spielberg did an excellent job best movie since Dances with Wolves. There where a few times when the tears where ready to flow, the white men took the lands from the Indians and it never stopped. I can not image what it was like to live then in constant fear on either side. The historical view was well done, my hat is off to Mr.Spielberg. If the government would have keep there promises than things would have been much different at least I think so.
ThePHNX Into The West A Stephen Spielberg Dreamworks ProductionAn Epic orgy of contemporary racism. All the bad guys wear white (skin) It seems the sage message is, nothing wrong with prejudice long as it's the WASP gets stung.Mysticism is restored to its pinnacle whence a new inquisition, this time the swarthy turn the screws. Doing dope and self mutilation is in, industry and technology are out, even the wheel takes a hit. All the while, Mr. Spielberg's Royce rolls merrily to the bank. We are served several scenes where reporters distort the truth to sell stories and then immersed in the most horrific Yankee version of the Lawrence Kansas raid. It seems the sage message is, nothing wrong with propaganda long as it serves the right (left) purposes. Edi Bernays YES, Joe Goebbels NO! Seems a bit slippery to me to glibly slide from extolling the virtues of one set rebels, the Lakota, to damning another, the Confederate. Suppose we need nip in the bud the growing awareness the South was not all wrong and it was not really about slavery: Lincoln back to sainthood, Quantrelle to hell (here on earth). So how do we rate this thing? Rank it rank? Not really, for there is much skill and talent evident, although the actors seem encouraged to smugness, especially the ti-pi dwellers - one suspects their new house in Malibu has sliding glass doors and plumbing - the costumes and sets are near perfect, the cinematography magnificent, the sound superb, and, yes, there is much excitement and entertainment. So we can't go too far south of five on a scale of one to ten. On the other hand, would be monumental hypocrisy praise Stephen Spielberg whilst Leni Riefenstahl is condemned. And as with "Olympia" there are some truths found "Into The West" (not as many, but some). Namely, you invade peoples land, drive them from their homes, destroy their way of life, expect them to get hostile. Would that Mr. Spielberg, a major er of Israel, took his philosophy 'Into The East'. A four out of ten, a "C" movie: ****------ / **---
