RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Ella-May O'Brien Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
Lela The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
yuengling215 This show is pretty decent for the most part... I got into the show right away and started to binge watch it! It is a sci-fi shows that is a little bit different than most in the sci-fi genre. If you're looking for something different I recommend you checking this out! It can be a little "campy" from time to time but most of the episodes are pretty good.
saebaby86 Truth be told, I haven't watched the Doctor Who series, so I'm not sure if that show is similar to Torchwood. I do know that Torchwood is a spin-off. That being said, I watched the first season and the fourth season. A few episodes into the second season, I stopped watching because it was boring. A few of the episodes made me wonder if I skipped an episode in between. I'm really not sure how else I can explain why I didn't enjoy the entire series.Redeeming factor: Miracle Day! I was hooked after the first episode. I already loved John Barrowman but adding Alexa Havins, Mekhi Phifer, and Bill Pullman to the cast was gold. The plot was better than the previous seasons (mind you, I skipped most of season two and all of season three). I'm glad I sucked it up and watched the final season.
probe_78 This is how I see Torchwood, your opinion may differ, so if you have not seen it, but the premise is interesting, give it a go. As many have said the seconds serial (or season or whatever) is better than first. In my opinion, not much, but still better.Good:Some scripts were clever and dealt with matters not seen too often. E.g. much hated second episode of series 1. Acting is mostly good.Largest flaws IMO:Character development is next to nill. OK, the one character changes to glorified zombie, so he cannot drink or have sex, but even that forgotten after one episode. Also, Gwens act of infidelity was forgotten and it was totally meaningless to whole series.Scripts try to be dark and adult, but because writers don't want to change characters, scripts remain shallow. There are dark and huge revelation (e.g. in Adrift), but those affect nothing, so drama is mostly lost.Scripts have some large plot holes, which may annoy watchers.Characters don't act coherently. Instead of character growth which happens during episodes of series, character demeanor changes randomly between episodes.Nothing characters do have any long term consequences. (ok this is a kind of lie. There are actually one or two cases where something has consequences, mainly Owens resurrection, but even that is flattened by the fact he is practically normal human until his real death.)Absence of series long story arcs.
Mavis Sebastian Bunbury Firstly, I have to say I think it's unfair to have to vote for Torchwood as a whole. On a series-by-series basis, I'd give the first two seasons 8 or 9 out of 10. Sure, they were silly at times but there was a warmth and humour that drew you in and made you care about the characters.Season 3 went a bit mad but you could suspend your disbelief and it was still gripping TV, but season 4??? I ed IMDb solely for the purpose of warning others like myself, DO NOT WATCH SEASON 4. Just walk away and pretend it never happened. My reasons for saying this are as follows: 1. A relentlessly unlikeable central character. I felt pure relief when Rex got shot at the end, and was inwardly applauding the writers for having the stones to do it, reminding us of the balance of nature etc: Rex was supposed to be dead in episode 1, we've come full circle blah blah blah. Instead they resurrected him and I felt shock, disbelief and horror that now this awful character could pop up at any time or place in the Torchwood/Doctor Who universe. Nooooooooooooooo!!! For the love of God, please, no! 2. An unforgivably meandering plot. Why 10 episodes? The Torchwood of old could have got the job done in just 1 or 2. The writers were spinning this story out way beyond the boundaries of good TV.3. This thin storyline was not even resolved to any degree of satisfaction. Tell us, or don't tell us what "The Blessng" is, but the wishy-washy half telling we got treated to was just painful and insulting.4. Pointless characters. Jilly, Oswald, Angelo and anyone remotely connected to him... What were they for? The only one I really liked with any consistency was Annwn.5. Gay gay gay. OK. Some people are gay. We get it. Jack shags men. But if the writers would just check their own back-story they might that he shags women and aliens too. He's omnisexual, which you'd have missed completely if the awful season 4 was your only point of reference. If Russell T Davies ever condescends to read a lowly review such as this I have one thing to say to him: Shame on you!
