Steinesongo Too many fans seem to be blown away
SanEat A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."
Stephanie There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Abegail Noëlle While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
tlyoung88 Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones rocks the screen on opposing sides of rock music controversy of the 1980s, making up for some weaker leads as Julianne Hough doesn't have a rock style voice and Diego Boneta, who lacks everything else.Still, weak performances did not take me out of the movie, and it was a fun ride from beginning to end.Unlike La La Land, there was no artistic pretension, no Oscar winning song with lyrics like "City of Stars shining ONLY JUST FOR ME????" Can you be more self-absorbed? This was your typical Hollywood fable and followed the beats precisely. It was raw, exciting and big like the 1980s.I do agree with some critics that the treatment of women was atrocious. This film ignored female rockers all together despite using their songs.Still, this film portrayed a male dominated industry so I give them a on this.I would watch this film again and again, but that being said, I do not recommend this film for wannabe rock stars and groupies who can't stand listening to other people covering classic songs. These people should not be watching musicals let alone critiquing them. What else is a musical but a cover of every song? Hopefully, as I've read in the notes, this film can be remade by an indie company so it can adhere closer to the stage version. I never saw it but this film made me regret not doing so.Then we will have a true Rock of Ages.
orfeas-kasap99 First of all let's say that it was really interesting to see Tom Cruise reach new lengths in a role, in which probably he wouldn't be the first person to come in mind when you think about an actor who can portray a rock star. It's a funny movie with some really good songs and most of the actors do a pretty good job. (Well it's obvious that Russell Brand is the comic relief character but this doesn't mean that it's bad). The plot is not something special but I think its better this way since the point of the whole movie is to show how both the protagonists eventually change. If you are bored, want to hear some good songs and have a few laughs then this movie may turn out to be exactly what you need.
purrfectfire Maybe I started watching this movie under the wrong assumptions. I didn't know that this was a musical production going Hollywood to start with, but in the Netherlands it was sold as a fun portrait of the 80's rock scene.Well... though the songs reminded of that time, I was looking for the rock-part until the end of the movie. Every time an actor belts out a hit, you're reminded that the original, however cheesy, was better, rockier or more honest presented. Though the actors are not bad singers, it's way too clean, sweet, boyband-isch or pop-ish to be considered rock at all.It reminds me of all the great fairy tales, that have been polished to something entirely different by Disney. Rock of ages also feels like it had a treatment in the censorship washing machine.I am all for a good happy ending and also musicals are a bunch of fun, but if you try to portray a certain subculture you have to be careful to do it right. I am living and breathing Rock, though I am open towards other styles and views, but this movie feels like someone took my (metaphorical) balls, painted them pink and threw them in the blender. And this is not only because of the music. The story-line was as hair raising as the washed out shadows of the great 80 hits. The makers explored side story just to have in every minority group possible, every lonely side character needed a partner and really EVERYBODY had to get the happy-ever-after option and didn't spend enough attention to detail for the main story.Though Cruise made for a good Axel Rose sort of Rock good, this was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
ggmcheartagram I wasn't expecting much from this movie but i actually ended up finding it a pretty fun ride. I thought almost all of the musical performances were brilliant, especially Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise and Malin Akerman, although i felt Julianne Hough was a tad nasally. The story line wasn't the best and rather cheesy at parts but it's a musical and in those performances it excelled. I also thought that it was a very good looking movie and that nearly everyone's hair, makeup and clothing looked brilliant. The girls looked gorgeous. I wasn't so keen on Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin in this movie, i can't fault their singing but i didn't find their performances believable. I was distracted by Russell's terrible Scouse accent, Alec's terrible hair piece and a very strange romantic sub plot which came out of no where... I recommend this movie if you enjoy musicals, loved 80s rock music or are just after a movie that is a bit of fun and nice to look at.
