BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
Pluskylang Great Film overall
Lidia Draper Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
snperera this is such an amazing movie and it is so sweet and it has such an amazing message! The actors in this are so great and they have such great chemistry together. This is a classic family film to me. The dog in this is so cute and so sweet and has such personality as well. The little girl in this is so sweet and this movie has such heart in it! Love this movie!
churchmouse-27279 Many of the actors I'm familiar with, either from the stage, Broadway, musicals, movies, etc. I'm delighted now to see this adaptation of the magnificent children's book was first filmed in 2005. Here it is,June of 2016, and in humble opinion this particular film is more refreshing and encouraging than ever, especially in the face of all the increased, horrific violence all over our planet. Bravo to all, and many thanks for those who have posted positive reviews! IMDb insists I write ten lines of my review or they will not post it. What else I say except that this new "Because of Winn-Dixie" is inspired, well acted, positive in it's many messages to adults and to children of all appropriate ages, well deserving of it's nominations and it's many awards, the music is lovely.
SnoopyStyle Opal Buloni (Anna Sophia Robb) moved with her preacher father (Jeff Daniels) to the small town of Naomi, Florida. Her mom had left them. He sends her to the local Winn Dixie grocery store where a dog is going wild. Opal pretends to the owner naming the dog Winn-Dixie. The dog is so rambunctious that her father calls the pound. She convinces him to keep the dog and gets a job working at the pet shop with Otis (Dave Matthews). She befriends blind hermit Gloria Dump (Cicely Tyson) with a tree and librarian Miss Franny Block (Eva Marie Saint) with a tall tale of an encounter with a bear.Anna Sophia Robb is a terrific child actress. She has great charisma and has very good range. She's great as a tomboy as well as with the other girls. This is a movie about lost and regret. I love all of the characters and they are played by solid actors. Maybe Otis could be played by somebody more menacing but Dave Matthews does get the damaged part of the character. It's a nice story of people struggling to move on from their past and it's got a nice cast.
ztorgo This was a beautifully acted movie with plenty of atmosphere and very little in the way of "sap." I loved the diversity of the cast and the positive trajectory of the plot line. Dave Matthews was fabulous as Otis-- a real natural. The dog is too damned cute for words.Having grown up in Florida, I found the setting and the atmosphere to be very believable. It evoked a time and place that is too little seen any more-- small towns where a variety of people come together in the course of everyday life to interact with each other and make a community. The young actress who plays Opal is very gifted, and very beautiful, and the ing cast-- including the incredible Cicely Tyson-- is consistently excellent.
