ChicDragon It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
Ogosmith Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
Ortiz Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
gavin6942 Mickey Mouse, piloting a steamboat, delights his enger, Minnie, by making musical instruments out of the menagerie on deck.I suppose someone could look back now (2015) and say this was a very simple film, and not all that amazing. But put in the context of its time, it really shook people and the young animation industry. Mixing sound and cartoons was still a new thing and this film not only blended them, but provided something people actually wanted to watch.Technical achievements aside, this is Mickey and Minnie Mouse almost 100 years ago... and they are going strong as ever today. Has any other cartoon character had that kind of longevity or long-lasting multi-generational appeal? Maybe to some degree, but certainly not on this level.
Horst in Translation ([email protected]) "Steamboat Willie" is a cartoon known to many because it features a very early version of world's most famous mouse. Mickey (still known as Willie here obviously) is on board of a ship and celebrates a wild party with all the animals around. He uses the pigs, cows, goats, ducks, cats etc. as music instruments and seems to be having a lot of fun. Well of course he does. After all, his beloved Minnie is on board as well, even if she almost missed the boat. Too bad the grumpy captain is not particularly amused by Mickey's shenanigans and solves the problem his very own way. This black-and-white 7-minute cartoon from over 85 years ago is certainly not the best Mickey Mouse short film out there. But regardless of its historic impact and the popularity that arose from it, it is still a very decent watch. Fun little movie and I recommend it. Oh yeah the director is Ub Iwerks and the voices all come from Walt Disney who also co-directed here.
Robert Reynolds This is the first sound Mickey Mouse short. There will be spoilers ahead:This short is well known as the short which made Mickey Mouse famous. In point of fact, both Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho are listed as having earlier release dates by The Encyclopedia of Disney Animated Shorts. This was the first one released as a sound cartoon. That likely explains why many think it was the first. This is, in many ways, a standard animated short of the late 1920s. The sound and the animation quality distinguish it from Terrtytoons, but the gags would feel quite at home in any Terrytoon of the period. The gags largely involve various animals.A cow (Clarabelle in her larval state) is loaded on the steamboat after being filled out with hay. This is the kindest thing done to an animal during the short Most of the others become musical instruments, even the cow! Mickey is the primary source for these acts. The gags are actually done with effectiveness for the most part. A rather obnoxious parrot gets his comeuppance on two occasions and deserved worse. This short has been released a number of times on DVD and is well worth seeking out. Most recommended.
timon310 While it's popularly thought and Disney propaganda, that Steamboat Willie is the first Mickey Mouse cartoon; the truth is that Plane Crazy is when Mickey made his first appearance. All one would have to do to check this is to look at the release dates. Plane Crazy was released before Steamboat Willie. My thought is that because Mickey attempts to have his way with Minnie in a not so very nice way in Plane Crazy, Disney has made a concerted effort to promote Steamboat Willie as Mickey's debut but that's not the truth. I love both of these shorts, but Plane Crazy gets the short end of the stick in Mickey Mouse/Disney Studios history.
