TeenzTen An action-packed slog
GarnettTeenage The film was still a fun one that will make you laugh and have you leaving the theater feeling like you just stole something valuable and got away with it.
Paynbob It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Catherina If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.
SnoopyStyle Kitty (Calista Flockhart), Sarah (Rachel Griffiths), Kevin (Matthew Rhys), Tommy (Balthazar Getty), and Justin (Dave Annable) are the adult children of Nora (Sally Field) and William Walker (Tom Skerritt). The Californian family owns fruit business Ojai Foods. Nora's brother Saul Holden (Ron Rifkin) is the financial officer. Kevin is a gay lawyer who eventually marries Scotty Wandell. Kitty is a conservative radio host who returns to LA to start a TV show. She leaves her new job for war hero Republican Senator Robert McCallister (Rob Lowe). Justin had gone to fight in Iraq following 9/11. Nora blames Kitty for Justin returning broken and drug-addicted. Sarah struggles with her marriage to Joe, her kids, and her work at the company. After William's sudden death, she and brother Tommy discover financial mishandling and his old affair with Holly Harper (Patricia Wettig) which seemingly produced love child Rebecca Harper (Emily VanCamp). The first season is a bit unstable. William's shocking death is obviously planned. Skerritt is a great actor and a devastating lost. It would have been nice to have him built up the character for a few more episodes before his death. There are other changes that kept the show off-balanced. At first, Kitty has a great liberal foil but that large part of the show is abandoned to recruit TV star Rob Lowe. It's understandable but the show does suffer from instability in the first season. The other big missed opportunity is the literal concentrating on the five siblings. There should be more on the next generation of siblings and cousins. The kids provide story potential and are arguably the best aspects of the fifth and last season. Paige has a couple of great traditional teen stories and there is the adoption of Olivia. More kids and more of their stories would have given the show character depth. This is a dysfunctional but loving family. They are often self-sabotaging. They can't keep a secret. They argue all the time and have cross-talking phone calls. All of this arguing and melodrama do wear the show down a bit. It needs more uplifting moments. It needs more joy. That's not to say that this is a downer but it does need more of the higher notes. Overall, the great cast is compelling and the family's unbreakable bond is always at its center.
vispateresa First of all, let me tell you that I haven't watched a TV series in ages (the last one I watching is "Brideshead Revisited" – a BBC production - back in 1981). I have to say I can't stand any of today's series – either American, British or Italian. I hate medical, detective and police series; in a word - all the popular series of these days, since they are all incredibly violent and gory – at least, for me. One evening I was idly zapping in front of the television when I found one of the first episodes of "Brothers and Sisters": I was pleasantly surprised since the characters were not annoying, nor impossibly beautiful; the plot was not silly like "Friends" and, most of all, there was a certain true-to-life atmosphere that made me continue to watch. So I borrowed the whole series from the library and I am now watching episode 80, something I would have never imagined. First of all, as I wrote, I like all the characters, especially Sally Field who is an incredible actress (like some other reviewer said, she is one of the best actresses ever). She can make you feel all of her emotions (whether she's happy, sad, anxious) and I think she's just great in her role as a mother who is always anxious for her children (she reminds me of the typical Italian mother). At times, she's just adorable with all her weaknesses and sometimes you wish you could enter the screen and embrace her. She can make you laugh and cry at the same time, especially when her heart is broken (look at her face when Simon leaves: she deserves an Oscar for that alone). You can see her all enthusiastic about a new date, as if she was a teenager, and you genuinely feel sorry for her when her expectations are disappointed. Then there's Kitty; she too is adorable (I confess I had seen her only in a couple of episodes of "Ally McBeal" but didn't like the series), whereas I like her here a lot. I find her a very good actress and she gives us a multifaceted character with all her strengths and weaknesses. All in all, all actors are very good and likable, you get to love each one of them for different reasons; let me just mention the very good Rachel Griffiths, who really surprised me (I saw her some 15 years ago in "Muriel's Wedding" and would've never expected such career).(Edited just to add how much I like Matthew Rhys and Dave Annable as well. Matthew is not only handsome but incredibly fun, I can't wait to see him in other films/series).I would also like to mention the work of the directors, which I find excellent: I like the pace and the rhythm, they manage to keep the attention of the viewer very high all the time. Plus, I like the fact that even the most dramatic moments are alternated with some humour. Last, but not least, we have some groundbreaking issues (at least, here in Italy) like a homosexual couple, two men kissing, the surrogate mother, and so on. Now that I'm approaching the end of the series, I wish there was another one similar to this one!
bbbbmer This series, as much as I LOVE it for the familial dynamics, a family dynamism which *I* never had, I truly resent, with each viewing, and I've viewed the entire series at least three times, now (it helps with insomnia, especially during the warm and fuzzy parts), the UTTER AND COMPLETELY FALSE REPRESENTATION OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY, portraying the GOP as somehow 'NOBLE' and 'pro healthcare', and 'pro- environment'....And in these days of Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan and the LOT of the Republican ilk, which has been in power since the end of this series, I find it a wholly FAKE depiction of Republican concerns and policies....SHAME ON YOU for depicting the GOP in any way HUMANE and concerned about the plight of ordinary Americans in any other way than which benefits the top 1% of this nation's wealthy population....
keithfearnley2001 I'm giving the show 8 out of 10, because through seasons 1-4, it was excellent TV. I really don't understand what has happened with season 5. First of all, the 1 year time jump, while it worked on Desperate Housewives and to a lesser extent, One Tree Hill, it really didn't work here. The events of the 'year' between seasons 4 and 5 seemed quite interesting, so why not just continue the show as normal and have these events, and others, play out over the season. The following are just some of the things that have recently been annoying me:Why keep Robert on life for a year, only to have him killed off in the first episode anyway? If Rob Lowe was leaving the show at the end of season 4, have season 5 open with his funeral. Hollys' memory loss was just silly and a waste of Patricia Wettigs' talents. To end up having her leave the show half way through the season as well without regaining her memory just seemed completely pointless. And don't even get me started on the Scotty having an affair debacle! Kevin and Scotty have never been the perfect couple, but for this revelation to be just thrown in at the end of an episode for no apparent reason really p****d me off, and just made me think the writers through a curve ball without really thinking it through. Why not show the event actually happening and bring it up later on rather than just slotting it in for shock value. It happened before with Joe & Rebecca, Tommy & Lena and Kitty and the park guy (can't his name). Now, for my main gripe. The budget cuts on the show have never been more apparent than in season 5. There are less and less parties being held or attended, less exterior shots. Cast suddenly disappear for episodes at a time (most likely ing the child actors in the cupboard). The main thing I have always liked about the show was the big family meals, or arguments, or even the huge phone calls between all of most of the cast at any one time. All of these things that made the show so great seem to have been put to the side in exchange for scenes featuring only a couple of cast , lacking in drama or comedic value. The writing this season has been lackadaisical, to put it mildly! I will continue to faithfully watch the show as I care about the characters and have done since episode 1. I only hope the show gets another season and perhaps a bit more money from ABC so it can make a creative comeback and perhaps go out with a bang!
