Fluentiama Perfect cast and a good story
Merolliv I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.
Seraherrera The movie is wonderful and true, an act of love in all its contradictions and complexity
Patience Watson One of those movie experiences that is so good it makes you realize you've been grading everything else on a curve.
charles-53188 I've seen the entire Deadwood series a dozen times, and considered my self a ionate fan of David Milch. Finally got round to watching this train wreck and was lost after three episodes. I only finished it to savour my incredulity via some masochistic urge to wonder why the writer of Deadwood could serve up this volcanic pile of crap, cancelled righteously, and now stone cold. Never been so disappointed as I was with this. I am more than a little interested in mystical stories which offer enlightening insight, yet I found this series exceptionally opaque, lending damage to any concept of spiritual virtue through reasoned obfuscation. As a fan of Deadwood, The actors from that ensemble appearing like pale ghosts in contemporary universe centred on a wasteland without redemption. Speech patterns and quirks of character from Deadwood are thick and abound to the point of alarming rehash, but it's not just sad, it's agonising... Where the misfits in deadwood were bound by a town in the wilderness, there in no reason for this weird and unsympathetic ensemble to hang in each other's orbit. Good bye & good riddance.
zee Let me set some background for me. I hate TV because 95% of it stinks. I can't believe the junk people waste their lives watching, and I am predisposed to hate any new TV that comes along. I've read several of Kem Nunn's novels, though found them terribly dark, and wouldn't have sought this out because he is a little too dark for me. I'm an atheist without any patience for religious nuts.So. I really liked this series and thought it was just one giant step away from being brilliant. If it's religious, it's religious in its best sense, a branch of philosophy rather than a dogma or excuse for hatred.Do not watch this if you are rigidly religious. Do not watch this series if you hate curse words. Do not watch this series if you don't understand that characters who are racist or homophobic do not equal the show's makers believing that racism or homophobia is fine. If you like thinking and if you enjoy art, give it a try. Some of what is going on well here: a) cinematography. I love the choice of filters or processing or whatever made the ocean scenes look as they did. And there are many shots that are pure poetry.b) acting. DeMornay's energy level is amazing as she shrieks her way through the mother/wife from hell roll. I had no idea Ed ONeill could actually act until I saw this--he has some chops. Brian Van Holt was affecting, sympathetic, and my attention was riveted whenever he was on screen. But nobody else was weak.c) writing. Not only this fascinating group of characters were written, not only this interesting premise, but a number of devices were at least clever. John's mimicry of others' words is occasionally brilliant and makes you stop and think about...how we sound to others...how we'd sound to ourselves...what communication is, really. This is the kind of work that makes me go back to the credits and say "who wrote this smart stuff?" "who directed that lovely moment?" I could go on, but I'll stop here. The whole thing was thought-provoking, and the last couple episodes reveals of the horrible thing that might happen in the future...that chilled me. Good work.
J. Wellington Peevis Show had tons of promise, and created a great texture that was a throwback to the golden television era. But...it just kinda fizzled mid-season, as if they really had no master plan for what was to be, and just ham and egged the plot line. The more they revealed the true nature of the story, the dumber it became. It went from really cool and fresh to the final life- season of Melrose Place in 5 episodes. I can hyperbole all night here, but i think you get the picture. Disappointing. So I don't know what to make of the whole project. Watch the first 3 episodes only? I cant really say. Personally, I can credit this failed venture with if nothing else turning me on to the amazing music of Joe Strummer, who's Johnny Appleseed backs the opening montage. Now thats good stuff!!
Cary Sato Lee Awesome show..One really needs to understand the language that is being spoken near the water to catch the subtleties of the writing. A lot if hidden agendas and just enough quirkiness to grab your attention. Just wish it was picked up for more episodes. A fresh look at what is available in the market..if one is willing to write about it. The actors are well cast for their individual roles and are played out to the tee. Just wish there were more character development at the beginning of the show on some of the players so the audience doesn't have to play catchup from one episode to another. Overall this show just needs better promotion in order to get a solid following like they did with Deadwood.
